About Dr Hari Jayaram

Dr Hari Jayaram is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Clinician-Scientist based at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he is the Director of the Glaucoma Service, with an honorary academic appointment as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London. He has a specialist interest in glaucoma, with expertise in the medical, laser and surgical management of adult glaucoma, including complex and secondary glaucomas, as well as cataract surgery, especially in patients with glaucoma.


Experience and training

Hari’s initial medical training was at the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford and he completed his specialist ophthalmology training at St Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He was awarded a prestigious Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Medical Research Council and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, leading to the award of a PhD in Retinal Stem Cell Biology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. As an Academic Clinical Lecturer at the NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre, Hari continued his post-doctoral research into stem cell based and other novel therapies for glaucoma and completed his subspecialty surgical fellowship training in glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in conjunction with Fight for Sight, spending two years at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon, USA undertaking research into the development of new treatments for glaucoma before returning as clinician-scientist faculty to Moorfields. He was Director of the Glaucoma Fellowship Program at Moorfields from 2016-2022 and currently serves as the Director of the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.


Research
Hari served as Vice-Chair of the City Road & Hampstead Research Ethics Committee (Institutional Review Board) from 2007-2014 and obtained a Master's Degree with Distinction in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in 2017, being awarded the University of London Centenary Award. He currently serves as Chair of the Research Management Committee, Chair of the Moorfields Consultants Committee and Director of the Glaucoma Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He chairs the Research Management Committee at Moorfields Eye Hospital and is an investigator on current glaucoma surgical trials of new minimally invasive techniques, studies relating to the mental well-being of patients with glaucoma and innovations in healthcare delivery through high volume diagnostic hubs. His laboratory research focuses on the development of strategies to protect the optic nerve in glaucoma using small molecules and stem cells. His research has featured in the

Dr Jayaram is an Editorial Board Member for several scientific journals (Translational Vision Science and Technology, Current Eye Research, Frontiers in Medicine). He is a vice-chair of the program planning committee for the World Glaucoma Congress hosted by the World Glaucoma Association and co-organiser of the annual Moorfields International Glaucoma Symposium. He is also a glaucoma faculty member for the “Faculty of 1000”, which undertakes “Post-publication peer review” of significant articles in the field of translational glaucoma research.
